Ship's Haven and Wolfe Point

Ships Haven is a cove about three miles South of the town of Alma, New Brunswick in Fundy National Park. In my view Fundy NP is to Canada what Yellowstone NP is to the USA: a Jewel of the Natural World.

 This is Ship's Haven
at High Tide.
Notice the Beach
at Right Center.

 Three hours later.
Wolfe Point is
upper Right.

    There is a lovely Path
    (mostly Boardwalk)
    down to the beach.

    The shoreline at
    Fundy National Park
    is mostly cliffs.
    To get down requires
a lot of steps like these.

    Almost to the Sea
    but it keeps receding
    with the Tide.

     On the Beach
    from the first PIC.
    Well, not quite...
At High Tide Jan would be
    in over her head.

    Nova Scotia is out there
    in the East.

    Finally to the Sea
    at Wolfe Point.
    At High Tide
    (in just 6 hours)
    Jan would be about
    32 feet
    under water.

     Geology at work.
    These Oscillation Ripple Marks
    are in mud.
    They will be many feet
    under the Sea at
    High Tide.
    These same patterns can be
    seen in sedimentary rock
    which was once ancient seabed.

    Dickson Falls

When we think about Fundy NP we will remember steps, lts of them.
    Don't be fooled by this
    bucolic scene at the
    start of the trail.
    It quickly turns to boardwalk
    and hundreds of steps.
Notice the Mist in the air.
    This "forest fog" is typical
of the area and is caused
by the cold Bay of Fundy water.
     Notice how green it is.
     Ferns and Moss....

    Bay of Fundy memories

Forty-six years ago Jan's Mom and Dad loaded the station wagon with six kids ranging in age from 15-3.  Off on a big adventure to see another country.  We landed at Fundy Bay where we all had a wonderful time.  This year we decided to go to Fundy Bay so that Jan could finally share that magical place with Lew.
First are the past memories that her brothers and sisters might recall.

    Entrance to the park view

Amphitheater seemed smaller than I remembered.

The golf course that my brothers and Dad played.
Near to high tide...about 30 minutes low.
Near Low tide..about 30 minutes off

    Birthday Weekend Visitors!

For Amy's Birthday we went to Dorset Quarry.  She wanted to swim!  That apple didn't fall far from the tree!  Birthday present for two!

    Ithaca

June 19-June 21. We like Robert Treman SP just South of Ithaca, NY as a stop-over on the way to Vermont.

The cold water in the swimming hole
    gave Jan some relief from
Calf muscle pain. We both overdid
    in West Virginia.

    Lucifer Falls had more
    water than we usually see.
While walking the upper gorge loop
    I was excited to finally
    spot a Hermit Thrush
    after listening to their
    songs most of my life.

    West Virginia

June 15---School is out and it is time to travel. First stop is Watoga State Park in West Virginia.  Situated on the Greenbrier River....
....it has a very nice campground with a nearby bike trail with bridges....

    ....and tunnels.

From the campground a hiking trail ascends to an observation tower. A 900Ft climb in one Mile.

Like most of America's State Parks this park was built by FDR's CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). This was a Great Depression program which provided three squares and a bed to unemployed single young men. The families also received directly a monthly check which was the man's wages. For many young men that was the only Work they had ever had and for many of their Families that was the only source of Money Income. In 1999 grateful former CCC men erected this statue in Honor of that "big government" program which provided hope&sustenance to so many and which built most of our State Parks. In today's political climate this kind of working-for-the-common-Good can't happen.
