We Fear for the Republic

So today is Primary Election day here in Pennsylvania and Lew dutifully went and Cast his Ballot.
Jan is registered as an Independent so she cannot vote in the Primary.

Lew Voted against another 100Yrs of War.

He Voted against
"the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex"
(quoted from a speech given by President Dwight D Eisenhower in 1961)

He Voted against Jingoism.
(Politicians wearing little Chrome Flags in their lapels, for example)

Can you guess who Lew voted for??

But it will make no difference because this Fall other Americans will send McCain to the Whitehouse and the Feeding Frenzy of the "Defense Contractors" will be as never seen before. Re-instigation of the Military Draft will probably follow.

Perhaps the nation which so whole-heartedly Drank the Koolaid of the Bush/Cheney Lie (that Sadam had "WMD" and was gonna Gas America or Blow it Up) and made a War where there was none before deserves to send it's Sons and Daughters to die in the One Hundred Year's War that McCain might very easily Create??

But there should be a way to send those who will Vote for War this November to McCain's Front Line instead of the Grandchildren.
But there should be a way to send those who will Vote for War this November the Bill for Bush's War and for whatever turns out to be McCain's War instead of leaving this terrible Debt to our Grandchildren.
But that won't happen.

Remember that the Bad Old USSR failed not because Ronnie&The Pentagon beat them, but rather because they spent their nation's Resources on Military Toys and collapsed in exhaustion. We may do the same thing; break the Nation's Back and Heart over The Pentagon's never-sated Lust for Toys. Toys like "Star Wars".

  1. When I was in my late teens, I read a book by a right-wing scholar (I didn't know that at the time) named Paul Johnson, called The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers, which argued that the _characteristic_ way that great powers have collapsed through history is through overspending on military projects. It's a strong argument, which can be supported with a range of historical evidence from across the globe.

A corollary to this theory is that military spending and military effectiveness don't always march hand in hand; while we are more effective than the Iraqi militias we fight, and the British regular army was more effective than the rag-tag Americans they fought during what we call the American revolution, neither one was at all cost-effective. Similar inefficiencies plagued, e.g., Sung China and the late Roman empire.

The old USSR spent so much on their military in response to the military strength of the NATO nations -- not just the USA.

With our allies we defeated that awful oppressive government that swallowed up eastern Europe, imprisoned their citizens within their borders, and threatened the whole world.

Eastern Europe is free today because of what the USA did along with England, Germany, France and others. If we had all been militarily weak the USSR would now control all of Europe.

  3. NATO did not defeat the Soviet Union. They defeated themselves. I merely said we should beware of Carte Blanche military spending least America suffers the same fate. Without counting Bush's War our military outlay is more than the rest of the World put together. Cutting that figure in half (for example) would not necessarily make America "militarily weak". Only Pentagon mismanagement can do that.
